I think what makes this scene especially emotional for fans is that we are witnessing even parent’s nightmare; losing a child. Tonraq is portrayed as a strong man and a leader, but he is also a father. He is the father of the Avatar, and we’ve seen in the past seasons that he’s always worried about his daughter’s safety. He is well aware of the responsibilities she has to endure as well as the dangers. In this moment, this is everything that he has ever feared. Even though they defeated Zaheer, his daughter did not make it out all right.

In the moments that Korra doesn’t respond to him, we as the audience can picture all the years Tonraq has had raising Korra. We can imagine her entire life flash before us and we feel the weight of the loss Tonraq is experiencing watching his daughter, his baby girl, slip away from him.

He isn’t watching The Avatar die. He is watching his child die.

I actually found it rather upsetting seeing such a vibrant, energetic and strong character in a wheelchair with obvious depression, in a way the it kind of hit close to home.

Finale messed me up bro.
